ZUGFeRD / Factur-X — Frequently Asked Questions

ZUGFeRD is a hybrid e-invoice format that embeds structured XML data in a PDF/A-3 file. It makes invoices both human-readable (PDF) and machine-readable (XML), ensuring automated processing and compliance with EN 16931.

Factur-X is the French implementation of the same hybrid PDF+XML approach as ZUGFeRD. It is aligned with EN 16931 and is the recommended format for electronic invoicing in France.

Technically they are very close: both embed EN 16931-compliant XML in a PDF/A-3 file. ZUGFeRD is the German standard; Factur-X is the French one. Profile names and some national extensions differ, but interoperability is high.
